Public Safety

To keep our city safe, New Orleans needs a fully-staffed 21st century Police force that gets results. As Mayor, I, Troy Henry will grow the NOPD to 1,600 officers and use every tool available towards his goal of Eliminating Violent Crime! That may seem like an impossible task, but the residents of our city should demand nothing less from the Mayor, City Council, Police Department, District Attorney, and the rest of our Criminal Justice System. I want to give the officers the much-needed tools and training to make 21st century policing a reality; including the latest technology, vehicles, and community policing. We need to increase retention in the homicide and drug policing ranks. I will work with the D.A. on smarter sentencing, bail, and prevention.

During the transition and prior to taking office, we will functionally analyze all elements of the law enforcement process, including: Calls for service response time, Manpower deployment, Recruiting, Retention and Customer Service (courtesy, proficiency and efficiency). Upon completion of the analysis, we will compare and map best practices to our current tools, processes and personnel. After understanding the gaps that exist in the police department, I will select a Leadership Team best suited to implement the best practices.

After the inauguration, we will begin our operational implementation with the goal of Eliminating Violent Crime. We will aggressively pursue the most violent offenders and take them off the streets. We will immediately form a strategic alliance with other state-certified law enforcement organizations to increase physical presence in our neighborhoods. We will begin implementing true community policing (every officer including the Chief works at least 1 patrol). We will restructure the paid detail policy, so that it is more compatible with the business, officer, and administration needs. We will also provide mortgage incentives for officers to live in Orleans Parish.
